Blog 19: Finished Chair

For my final blog for des comm this quarter, I wanted to show off the finished version of the chair I've been working on all quarter. The seat and ottoman are made from clear acrylic, the legs are powder coated stainless steel, and the cushions are marine-grade vinyl. I bent the steel and acrylic myself and had the seats upholstered. The crit was yesterday and it went incredibly well. This quarter was the best one yet and I'm happy I ended up with such an awesome chair in the end.

Blog 18: Final Table Board

My final design is a side table to goes along with the chair I'm making this quarter. It features 3 different layers with the bottom two for storage and the top layer as a normal table top. The bottom layer also features a crossbar so that books and magazines can lean in between it and the lip.

Blog 17: Chair Image Board

For my final Des Comm project of the quarter, I'll be designing a side table that goes with my chair design. So this image board works for both my chair and this project. The lounge chair and ottoman were basically the starting point for my chair. The chair in the foreground inspired me on how to incorporate the seat cushions in relation to the chair body. The fashion figure is simple and elegant like my chair. The clouds follow my concept that you're floating while sitting in my chair. And the Fox Terrier is just a small element that's there as an easter egg.

Blog 16: Final Clock Board

Here's my final concept for the desk clock. It's Maserati brand and has a few features that resemble that of a Maserati car. The clock itself is in the shape of the grill of a Gran Turismo, and it also features the name across the side, which resembles how they are shown on the cars. The configuration of the buttons are similar to the dashboard of the Gran Turismo also.

Blog 14: Chair Crit #5

Here's my 5th major crit of the quarter, the Functional Model Crit. Only 1 more to go! So as you can see, the model is pretty much the same as the one from the previous crit. I figured that the seat would be able to hold someone since it's made of 4 layers of cardboard. My ottoman from the last crit was also pretty stable, so I decided to keep it for this one. The only things i changed were the radius of the seat and i made legs made of mdf on it to replace the pvc legs. It turned out really well and it pretty comfortable.

Here's my full size visual model. It's used to see if proportions are correct and whatnot. It's made out of cardboard, pvc pipe, and muslin. Those pvc legs were super unstable, but they represented my idea pretty well.

Here are the full size orthos we had to print out of our chairs. Mine is an easy chair, so it's pretty low to the ground. My final height is about 2 inches lower than they are in these orthos. Also I made the legs lean inwards instead of having them both lean in the same direction. I also included a quick render of my final design at the bottom.

So here I've settled on the 3 ideas I was thinking of pursuing. After modeling and putting in accurate dims, some of my ideas really changed. Like the long Chaise lounge looks completely different with correct proportions. So I settled on my 3rd idea with the ottoman and odd side piece. That piece didn't make it to the next step though.

Here are the 3 direction i chose to decide between. They really changed once I made them in 3d with correct dimensions. Proportions changed and somethings just didn't turn out the way they looked in my sketches. The top pic is the design i ended up deciding on, but my final design is pretty different. That side part on the top pic is there so you can lean into the corner. Wait and see if it made it into the final design!

Blog 5: Expressive Earbuds Part 2!

Here is my updated board for the headphones. I went with a space theme for my final concept, so I replaced the spiderweb with outer space. Also, here's my final board for the UFO earbuds. The LED lights glow to the beat of the music you're listening to. The antennas broadcast a radio signal of what you're listening to so someone could hear what you here. There's are for the constant Raver that's always full of life a brings the music with them wherever they go.

My design is the intimidation clock, which helps you improve your ability to wake up to your internal clock out of fear, lol. The two versions of the clock intimidate you into waking up, so eventually you won't even need an alarm clock. Here's the quick board I put together.

Blog 2: What's a Visual Resume?

We made these in our des comm recently as a way to spice up the typical resume page. Here's mine:

Now let me explain the images in it.
1. The plane = Sonoco. My first co-op that was located near the Cincinnati airport.
2. Pho Boston sign = Legrand. My 2nd co-op. The company was near the best Vietnamese restaurant ever.
3. Rango = Proctor & Gamble. On my last day there, everyone on my design team went to see Rango. Quality last day.
4. The Moon = Cincinnati State. Most of my classes there were night classes, so I think the moon represents that nicely.
5. The crane = UC. It's the most important part of my journey and that's why it's holding everything else up. Also, during my freshman year, all of the nice new buildings at UC were being built, so the UC stood for Under Construction.

Blog 1: How ya doin, P&G?

I'm terrible about keeping up on on blogging, but I'm back again. It's now Spring Quarter, which is the infamous Chair Quarter. But this blog isn't about chair stuff. I'm gonna talk a little about my experience at P&G this past quarter.

Last quarter when it was time to apply for jobs, I applied to P&G with the mindset that I would definitely get the job, and as it turned out, I did. I was starting to worry too because it was getting towards the end of the quarter and I didn't have a job yet. But I ended up with biggest jobs available to us. When I first got there, I really wasn't sure what I would be doing. Sooshin and a guy I worked with at my first co-op said that P&G was a boring job, so I figured I wouldn't be doing much design work. Man, I was wrong about that. Out of my three co-ops, this was by far my busiest.

I've said this to people before but I only remember 1 day where i had 3 hours of free time, and that was it. I was constantly busy, and I had to manage my work load a lot. There were also tons of meets, so I had to get used to that type of environment. The atmosphere there was the thing that surprised me the most. I thought it would be stuffy and uptight, but it turned out to be pretty laidback. At least in the design area it was. All of the people there were very friendly and were always there to help me along. They invited me to come back for summer quarter. Apparently this is a pretty big deal since they don't ask a lot of people back, and the people they do ask back end up being asked to stay on a permanent basis. So we'll see where this takes me! Alright, I'm out.

Course Evaluation

I think this was one of the best des comm quarters we've had so far. I liked the assignments we had this quarter but I wish our 1st and 2nd projects weren't so similar. The new way of presenting was pretty cool. It definitely kept things interesting, while the normal presentations can get boring since they tend to drag on. These can have their low moments, but it keeps everyone on their toes. The time given to work on our studio boards was also helpful. Extra feedback is always useful. So I guess my main suggestion would be to keep the projects varied and that will help them to be more interesting.

I think a blog is great way to expose people to your work. It's easy for our class to see what each other is up to and what's going on in each other's minds. I guess the thing about this blog is that it became somewhat of an afterthought because we were so busy this quarter. So the blogs were saved to the last minute or just not done to the fullest. They are definitely great tools, but are just difficult to maintain all the time.

Personal Evaluation

I think my study work was great this quarter. I picked a project I have a lot of insight on, and it was related to something I'm passionate about. So it kept me interested the entire quarter. Everything worked out as planned and I'm happy with the outcome. As for des comm, I think for the first few projects I was distracted by all of the work that was there for the studio project, so I didn't get to invest as much time into them as I would have liked. During the contest project I had a lot more time since studio work slowed down, so I feel like I ended up with something that I'm happy with. My liquid nitrogen ice cream maker turned out really well and I'm happy with the improvements to my portfolio. I'll just have to continue improving my time management skills for next quarter and beyond.

Goals for next quarter:
1. Improve time management skills
2. Continue improving at sketching
3. Make an amazing chair

Open Post 2

So today I lost my USB drive with all of my work from this quarter on it, and I'm kind of annoyed. I did back up my stuff a week or 2 ago, so I didn't lose everything, but I did lost plenty. Aside from the drive itself, I lost pretty much everything I did for this class, and the work I did towards my studio project in these past 2 weeks. I still have the data for my final model, so everything isn't lost. I'm just annoyed that someone would find a random usb in a computer and rather than turn it in, because you know someone's work is on there, you keep it. That's just ridiculous to me. It's exam week. Give someone a break. So as far as how this relates to design? I'm annoyed that my designs are gone because someone is too much of an ass to turn something in to the front desk.

The person I was planning on interviewing still hasn't gotten back to me, so I'm just going to post the questions that I was going to ask him.

1. Which do you prefer, Consultancy or Corporation?
I've always been curious where most designers prefer to work. I guess it would also depend on what role the designers prefers to take on in a job.

2. What's the favorite product you've designed over the years?
Knowing what a designer is most proud of gives a lot of insight into where their passions are.

3. What advice would you give to a young designer?
Getting advice from someone who has been there before is essential in helping you figure out how to approach different situations.

Review Goals

This is my progress report for the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the quarter. The goals I set for this quarter were:

1. Continue to improve upon my skills and become a better designer.

2. Make a studio project that I am passionate about.

3. Get a great co-op job for winter quarter.

4. Continue having great fun with my studio friends.

Here's how I think I've done so far;

1. I'm learning more about Photoshop and Illustrator this quarter because of des comm. I think that's really helping to broaden my skill set.

2. My project for this quarter is related to my favorite hobby, so I've definitely achieved this goal. It's been tough finalizing my design. I've gone through tons of directions, but I've finally found one I'm happy with.

3. No job yet. So this one is still up in the air. I'm confident though.

4. I've been to a few more studio outings this quarter, and I've become closer to more people in class. So I think I'm accomplishing this one pretty well.

Mixed Media Project

I decided to design small MP3 players similar to iPod Shuffles for the Sony Walkman brand. My ideas were to make an mp3 player who had a built in clip as the main focus of the design. In the render that's less photoshopped, the design ended up looking like those snapping joke teeth, lol. I don't think the other design was as successful. The screen isn't really necessary. In each render I made the individual mp3 players be slight variations of each other. Some had lights, and some had extra details. Overall the less photoshopped render turned out the best. Everything looks more natural, while the other designs are too cartoony.

My Strengths

My biggest strength is currently my SolidWorks skills. I pretty good with the program and I can create models in a pretty short time. That came in handing during my co-op at Legrand because I had to churn out model after model. Aside from that, I feel that I need to improve in almost every area to become a great designer. I'm definitely getting better, but I feel like I still have a ways to go. I am aware of my short comings, which I think is a strength in and of itself. It's an ongoing process, but I know one day I will be where I want to be.

Good Design

Good design is something that I equate to timeless designs. If a design is timeless and can survive over many years than it obviously is a pretty good design. So my example for good design is the Converse Chuck Taylor shoes. They've been around for over 30 years, yet the design has barely changed at all. They're a very simple design that's easy to manufacture, which keeps them relatively cheap. You see all kinds of people wearing Chucks. From design students, to rappers, they're a classic shoe that can go with anything. There's a reason you see so many similarly styled shoes from low quality brands, and even brands like Diesel and True Religion.

I'm thinking a lot of these these sketches are done in pen and markers, but I'm not sure. If it is marker then I've never seen them used like that before. I'd love to be able to sketch like this, but I can barely fathom making something as elaborate as these....

Pen Project

One of the main challenges was visualizing the infographic. I couldn't figure out how to put the visuals I had in my head onto paper. My original concept involved using the heads of presidents on represent the amount of money people spend on pens, but I couldn't figure out how to create convincing representations in Illustrator. I ended up changing my concept and it I was better able to convey the my main point in my new infograph. It was also interesting rendering with Illustrator for the first time. I still have some tricks to learn, but I think they turn out well.

I started following blogs a few years ago and they've given me a lot of insight into the world of design. I mostly followed my favorite music artists and they happened to feature a lot of design related posts on their blog's. It was mixed in with the music talk. After I followed just those first couple of blogs, I started to branch out into dedicated design blogs. They really give you a new perspective into how other people design. It can be very inspiring to see how someone else does it. I've always wanted to get into blogging myself, but I have never taken the time to do it. I'm not the best writer, and I've always feared that no one would read it or I wouldn't be able to find enough content to keep it going. My I'll start one some time soon...

Inspiring Designer

Spencer Nugent is a great designer with incredibly good sketching skills. Because this guy is skilled, he is able to run two of the most useful websites for up-and-coming designers: idsketching and sketch-a-day. These two sites are out there to show other designers new methods and techniques to improve their skills. He is very good at communicating different his process and his methods. This makes him easy to follow. If you don't follow his sites, now is a great time to start. Here are some examples of his work.

The things that make these infographs effective is their use of colors. Even though the third infograph is more complicated than the other two, it is still easy to follow because of the use of color. Also the simple design helps to get the point across easily.

Fall '10 Portfolio

Some of the key challenges I had while updating this portfolio was making sure all of the projects flowed nicely together. There was a larger disconnect between my projects before I updated them. I resolved this by making sure the text was uniform between all the projects. Before I had way too many fonts, colors, and font styles, but I picked my main colors and fonts, and just made sure every project fit in with those rules. Also, before I redid a lot of this portfolio this summer, a lot of my sketches weren't up to par. So I made it a point to redraw almost every sketch that I showed in my portfolio. I even redid some renders since better software was available. Welp, these are the results of my hard work. I hope you enjoy my final portfolio.

Film

I believe that the trailer for the movie 300 is easily one of the best action movie trailers of all time. It plays perfectly into the movies strengths and unique style. 300 was the first movie to use the "slow motion, to sped up motion, back to slow motion" method for action shots and when it's spread out over a short trailer, it really emphasizes amazing the action is. The trailer really communicates how powerful a group of just 300 mean against thousands can really be. From the shouting of, "THIS IS SPARTA!" to the giant pile of dead Persians where Leonidas says, "This is going to be a long night." You really get the feeling that some badassery is about to go down when you see this movie. This trailer is also what led the movie to having the best opening weekend for a movie release in March.

Inspiration

My inspirational brand is Diesel. They're a clothing and lifestyle brand that exemplifies an adventurous spirit and a lust to have fun with life. I like to apply their philosophy to my designs by not holding back even if a design sounds crazy on paper. They also like to break the rules and I too like to shy away from the conventional approach to certain things. I think that is also a key to their success. A lot of luxury brands really lack personality, but Diesel has it in spades. By continuing to push the envelope they continue to be successful, and I think that if I do the same, I will become successful too. I'm also inspired by the fact that Diesel is a clothing brand but it uses a lot of industrial design with it's fashion, accessories, and even has it's own line of motorcycle helmets. On Diesel's main site they feature cool products that also fit into the Diesel lifestyle that are designed by other brands.

portfolio advice

I always used to think that a portfolio needs a consistent layout throughout the entire document, but after looking through some really awesome portfolios, I don't think it's necessary now. I find that it's okay if your layout varies as long as individual layouts really add to the flavor of each project.

You should adapt your portfolio to fit the style of what each job you're applying to. The Design Droplets Blog asks, "Who is this portfolio for?" That's a very important question because an electronics manufacturer probably doesn't want to see your wallet sketches and a wallet maker probably won't care about your bottle render. You must tailor your portfolio to match the job you're looking for. You can include the other stuff for diversity, but don't make it the main focus.

My last tip is to show your portfolio to your peers for advice. Your fellow designers are there to help you and don't have an emotional attachment to your work like you do. So outside insight can be very helpful when making changes and trying out new ideas.
